I'm skipping the Friday 5 questions this week and just going for these.

All of the answers below refer to Ala Moana Shopping Center in Honolulu, the biggest shopping mall in Hawaii which is located about 3 blocks away from my residence.



1. Closings: The most recent store to have departed the Ala Moana Center that I miss is SEARS. Stupid center management took out one of the most local friendly stores and are replacing it with high priced town houses, Bloomingdales and other high priced stores. Ala Moana certainly has lost all the local charm it once had and it is now and has been for at least the last 20 years, an expensive high end mall... which is very sad and misses the intention of the center when it was first built in the late 1950s. Through the 1960s and 1970s it was the most popular shopping mall for local people to go to and get goods and services that were for the most part, affordable.

That all said here is the death roll of some stores and restaurants that were once at Ala Moana Center and are now all gone, mostly replaced with high-end, expensive boutique type establishments:

• Woolworth
• JC Penney
• Zippys'
• Sharper Image (another good place to browse but I never bought anything from them)
• DJ's Sound City (record store)
• Ritz (clothing)
• Walden Books
• Honolulu Book Store
• Patti's Chinese Kitchen
• Francis Camera (was not very cheap but was a good place to browse)
• Hawaiian Airlines Ticket Counter
• Aloha Airlines Ticket Counter (the airline went out of business in 2008)
• Keiki Land
• Farrell's Ice Cream Parlor
• L and L Drive In

2. Good stuff to eat at your favorite shopping mall? In Ala Moana Center there is always a fallback to McDonald's since they are affordable and anything else you can take out of either Foodland or Longs' Drug. Otherwise I like all the Japanese bento places in the Shirokiya store. Another good thing they have at Shirokiya is a good selection of used, affordable CDs, DVDs and video games.

3. Services at Shopping Mall: The U.S. Post Office at Ala Moana Center is open on Saturdays!

4. Never Been Inside: Ala Moana Center - Many of the high end boutique stores and high end restaurants like Mortons' and Assagio's.

5. Store most welcome? In Ala Moana Center? Sears or Target. Something that is affordable for local people. That said, it is good that WalMart is only a block away from the expensive mall.

6. Most recently purchased at an office supply store? Paper.

7. Book Store purchase? Nothing recently.

8. Drugstore? Most recent purchase was toothpaste and soap at Longs.

The last two answers do not pertain to Ala Moana Center:

9. Convenence store purchase? Gas at a small place along Kapahulu Ave.

10. Thrift shop purchase: A 35 mm Minolta SLR camera a few years ago.

3. What’s a more annoying sound: car alarms or leaf-blowers?

In my urban environment, car alarms definitely are annoying. Don't have many trees in my area, so no leaf blowers in this concrete jungle.

4. What’s a sound most people seem to like but you hate?

Jawaiian music. Hardcore gangsta rap music.

5. What’s a sound most people seem to hate but you like?

Airplanes of all types... jets, turboprops, more.

Answers to Questions:

1. Toilet tank - Nothing mostly but sometimes soap.



2. Dashboard of my car - Nothing unless I put my iPod on top of it.

3. Fridge - The Microwave is on top of my fridge... my fridge is half size so that's why. I live in a small apartment.

4. Front porch - I have none since I live in a condo. Condo, apartment both same to me.

5. Bathroom Sink - Bar of soap

6. Personalized workspace - One of my MacBook Pro's since the official office computers are PCs only.

7. Most spent on a meal out - More than $120 at Ruth Chris Steak House about 3 times a few years ago. More recently $71 at Mediterrano. As long as I am having a meal with a good friend it is worth it. If I eat alone, then Zippys' or Burger King will do fine!

8. Greatest Height Look Down From - Perhaps 32,000 feet from an airplane. On the ground, that would be in 1974 when I went to the 88th floor of the Empire State Building in NYC. I would have gone to the top, but the line for the single elevator was too damn long and we did not have time to wait!

9. Animal in the Wild - Mongoose perhaps, usually running across the road to avoid being hit.

10. Eye songs - Got 123 songs with "eye(s)" in the title. If I go by total plays so far for this year, the two most favorites are "Ebony Eyes" by The Stylistics and "The Story in Your Eye" by The Moody Blues.

Friday 5 for Jan. 24, 2014 - Alternate Uses

1. A sticky note is supposed to be used for sticking notes temporarily to stuff. What’s a different way you’ve used a sticky note?

Don't use them much beyond their intended purpose.


2. Plastic cutlery is supposed to be used for moving food from a plate to your mouth a few times before being discarded. What’s a different way you’ve used plastic cutlery?


Use in a potted plant to dig out weeds.


3. Books are supposed to be for reading. What’s a different way you’ve used a book?

Pile up a bunch of books near the door and you have a door stop! Thick, heavy books are also good for use as a tool to flatten curled objects such as photos, posters or maps.


4. A file folder is supposed to be used for holding and organizing important papers. What’s a different way you’ve used a file folder?

Back in the day when I could not find an index card I used to cut a file folder to size and make audio cassette case label J-cards. You can get about 3 of them from an 8 1/2 x 11 size file folder.

5. A shoe is an article of clothing meant for wearing on a foot. What’s a different way you’ve used a shoe?

Merry Christmas. As usual this one comes from Scrivener's Friday 5 site.

1. What book’s pages seemed to fly by as you read them?

The Time Machine by H.G. Wells and LOST MOON by James Lovell - the latter is the true story of the Apollo 13 space flight in 1970.

2. What’s a book you were pretty sure you would dislike but turned out to be great?

Can't think of any since I don't read too many books that I dislike.

3. What book’s main character would you fall in love with if you knew him or her in real life, and why?

Weena from the Eloi in the Time Machine. Naive and vulnerable, her entire race was just fodder for the evil Morlocks. Of course I already had a vision of her since I saw the 1960 movie before I read the book.

4. Who’s the author you’ve read the most books by?

Frank Herbert - 4 of the DUNE books.
Arthur C. Clarke - 3 of the 2001 series books.

5. What’s a really long book you enjoyed?

The original DUNE book by Frank Herbert. Heavy, complex storytelling filled with political intrigue, strange technologies, gigantic creatures, aliens and rebellious people. The spice, the spice, the spice.

1. What’s the best white food?

Refined WHITE SUGAR because it makes a lot of other foods taste good. However too much SUGAR is not very good for your health. It takes a fine balance between how much good and bad you get out of SUGAR.

None. Don't wear that color very often.
