Friday 5 for July 25: Scattergories, part 15! - The Letter F

Scattergories Part 15: The Letter F

1. What’s a great summer food?

Definitely NOT FRUITCAKE.... Overall most Fruits, but defying the letter F, most likely for me it is WATERMELON or Banana. I'm not a fan of Figs, and they don't ring "summer" to me. Sorry F.

2. What item not usually bequeathed in a will, would you like to pass along to someone when you die?

Since I haven't died and my parents did not bequeath specific items, I would have to say FURNITURE for this one... and I don't have much... mostly cheap Walmart furniture. I also have a FAN, and maybe if I dug through my closet, perhaps there is a rotting FRUITCAKE... though that is unlikely.

3. What’s an admirable quality in a book but not in a person?

A lot of fiction liberally use the word FUCK in their narratives, but generally it is not a good thing for a person to say. I don't think the word is admirable, but I do notice it a lot. That said a good FINALE to a good story is admirable, while a FINALE in a person's life usually means death.

4. What’s a good food to add to other foods?

FRENCH FRIES go good with hamburgers, sandwiches and cheap Fish and Chips. And then again many varieties of FISH are great. Plus chopped raw FISH goes well with Sushi and other dishes.

5. What could make your day better right now?

FINISHING it off on a good note!

Yep, this one was late... it's Wednesday and I could not pass up Scattergories. Thanks Scrivener.

Friday 5 for August 16: Scattergories, Part 14

Friday 5 for August 16: Scattergories, Part 14

The annual Scattergories thing for this week's Friday 5. Yay! My letter for this year is...

i

1. If you can schedule it, what would you like for your last meal?

Among the menu items for my last meal, there would definitely be an ICE CREAM dish, preferably a big ICE Cream Sundae....

2. Where would you like to be buried?

Since I more than likely will be opting for CREMATION, I will be sent to the Mortuary's INCINERATOR to have the useless body reduced into a heap of ash. Hopefully the mortuary will scoop up most of my ashes and put them in an urn for disposal later... though I think some will end up on the floor in the INCINERATOR and be swept away.

3. What will they place in your coffin to be buried with you?

Coffins are expensive, so I am going with INCINERATION which equals to cremation. Maybe I'll burn up my old iPOD TOUCH 4 with the long dead, built in battery along with my useless corpse. I HATE BUILT IN BATTERIES... They lead to an early death while the device is still functional.. Why can't they have iPhones and other devices that have batteries that end users can easily replace???? I hate built in obsolescence!

4. Who will sing at your funeral?

I will choose one of my playlists from either SPOTIFY or YouTube Music to stream my favorite songs. LIVE singers are never good as the record unless you have enough money to hire the original artists.... which is impossible in my INCOME bracket.

5. Who will deliver your eulogy?

At this time... ME MYSELF and I... I might audio record something really short and just have that play at some point in one of the above playlists... Easy to do with a YouTube Music mix since they allow you to upload up to 50,000 of your own MP3 or AAC files for free. I could probably put my very short eulogy at the beginning, middle and end of the music mix.

On another note funerals... are they even necessary? It's just another added expense to the death process.

The three letters offered on my only spin.

Friday 5 for July 21: Scattergories Part 13

These are the answers to Scrivener's annual Friday 5 Scattergories questions which features the never changing nifty online random-letter generator.

My letter for 2023. I got a 3 letter sequence: btv

I'm going with the letter B Ernie.

1. What should you always be careful with?

Bullies. If you know someone who is a bully, the best thing to do is to avoid them whenever possible. I always take this to another level by avoiding "bully locations" such as...er... um Kalihi and Kuhio Avenue in Waikiki during the night time hours. Those areas and several others in Honolulu are high crime areas where bullies, drug pushers, gangs, etc. could strike at you in a very negative way. So yes... B is for BULLIES.

2. With whom would you like to have dinner?

Just off the top of my head, there is no one I personally know that whose name starts with the letter B. That said my other choice would be the actor Bruce Boxleitner. So B is for BRUCE BOXLEITNER... and we have a double B here. Yay!

3. What would you like to learn how to do?

Bake a cake or pie? Sounds delicious. I have never considered myself a cook. I can make edible stuff to just get by. Baking I don't have much patience for, but it does yield something delicious, most of the time... Oh and baked chicken I guess. That is good. B is for BAKE.

4. Where will you find what you’ve been looking all over for?

Ben Franklin Crafts store. I may be able to get some materials that I need to cut and shape and use to replace light baffles in several of my aging film cameras. B is for BEN FRANKLIN CRAFTS STORE.

B is also for Benjamin Franklin, one of the Founding Fathers who signed both the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution.

5. What do you dream about?

New BABYLON 5 movies and series is a dream every B5 fan like me wants

This year fans are getting a one-off animated Babylon 5 TV movie of the beloved sci-fi series that helped revolutionize episodic TV storytelling

The place is Earth 1993; The show is Babylon 5. It premiered on the now defunct PTEN network in 1993 (the pilot) and launched into a full blown TV series lasting 5 more years through 110 episodes.  Babylon 5 had a focused storyline with interesting characters, plots and sub-plots that carried from one episode to another forming a long, planned story arc that lasted for five years (seasons).

Babylon 5's creator and writer of nearly all of the episodes J. Michael Stravinsky (JMS), pitched the series as a "five year novel for television." First run episodes of the entire story ran from 1994 to 1998 on the PTEN network and TNT cable. The show was released to DVD and is streaming on TUBI TV and the Roku Channel.

After the original series finished its network run, a short-lived sequel series titled Crusade was produced for 13 episodes in 1999 before being cancelled by TNT.  Four made for TV movies were also produced and aired between 1998 and 2000 on TNT.

Warner Brothers television, the franchise rights owner to Babylon 5 announced a re-imagined series that is supposed to debut on the CW network written by JMS. Since 2020 the series is in development limbo due to a number of factors impacting the show's production.

This year a Babylon 5: The Road Home, an animated movie written by JMS will be released to home video and possibly run on a streaming service such as Amazon Prime. An official announcement regarding the movie's streaming schedule and channel has yet to come. Orders are now being taken for the DVD.

Speaking of which, JMS also announced that Babylon 5 will be released to Blu-Ray DVD for the first time ever. For many years fans had to be satisfied with releases on VHS and standard DVDs. I have all of the standard DVDs.

Above: Civil war breaks out between the Earth Alliance and Babylon 5. This clip is from the Season 3 episode Severed Dreams which won a Hugo Award back in 1994. All of the music for Babylon 5 was composed by Christopher Franke of Tangerine Dream.

Friday 5's: Friday 5 + 1 + 5 = 11!

This post catches up on two week's worth of Friday 5s. The questions are sourced from the usual place... The Friday 5 blog.

August 5, 2022 - WHMS

WHMS - A radio or TV station or just a fancy way to say "whims".

1. What’s the farthest you’ve ever driven in one trip?

Um.. since I live in Hawaii there is not too many places you can go. They are mostly near, but go over an hour, then that's far. That said... on the Big Island of Hawaii.... Honokaa to Ka'u on the south-side of that island. Did that in 1984 when we took my grandmother on a drive back to the area she grew up during the early years of the last century. It was a fun, multi hour trip for the day that covered more than 200 miles I guess. We did that with my parents' Ford Granada.

I've been to the continent, but none of the trips I drove there were "far"... Las Vegas to the Hoover Dam and a little over the boarder into Arizona... Um.. ok...more sand and desert, we turned back avoiding an even longer, unplanned trip segment.

2. What are you very particular about when ordering in a restaurant?

Make sure they have free iced water. Some restaurants don't. I do not do alcoholic beverages or sugared soft drinks.

3. Which of your friendships goes back the furthest?

My sister! Knew her since 1965 (baby time). We keep in touch. Friendships with my cousins go back more than 50 years, though I am not very close to most of them. After that my ongoing friendships (mainly through Facebook and other social media platforms) with some grade/high school classmates (1970s). After that some of my college friends (late 1970s)... and then professional friends from the 1980s onward. Not mentioning any names, but if you follow me on Facebook, you may know who some of them are.

4. How do you feel about romantic comedy films, and what’s your favorite?

Um... I can live without them... That said, the ones I enjoyed the most:

  • Splash
  • Sixteen Candles
  • Pretty in Pink
  • Sleepless in Seattle
  • Romancing the Stone

5. How did you spend last new year’s eve, and how would you like to spend the next?

I stayed at home. I did the same the previous year and will probably do the same this coming new year. Ho hum. Not much to celebrate as I grow older.

6. Bonus question, since it’s the sort not everyone can answer: What’s your favorite song from Oklahoma!?

Checked some YouTube clips. Don't recall any of them, though I do remember Shirley Jones who went on the star in The Partridge Family from 1970 to 1974.

July 29: Scattergories Part 12

This is the random generator one. Let's see which letter option I'm gonna do:

[Spin]

Ding! I got C and we know "C is for Cookie!"

1. What geographical feature should be renamed in your honor?

Cape of Mad Mel - You know way down south near South Africa and Antarctica. A menace to navigation!

2. Who should play you in a movie about your life?

Clint Eastwood. Heh. One of my favorite actors currently alive, though his characterization of me would probably not match since I associate him with "tough guy" roles. More to my liking and still alive is Tom Hanks.

3. What are you chasing?

Elusive CASH.

4. What’s getting in your way?

Lack of CASH

5. What are you especially grateful for this week?

CASH! I found a dime on the ground the other day. Plus I can use cash to pay for COOKIES! I am always grateful for cookies that I can eat and not the evil ones I have to delete from my browsers.

Friday 5 for July 24: Scattergories, Part 10!

It's that time of the year when we choose a random letter from the "nifty Random Letter Sequence Generator". This year I get the letter H.
Questions from the weekly Friday 5 website.

H

1. What’s something in your pantry, beginning with the letter?

Ritter Chocolate Bar with Whole Hazelnuts.

Ritter Whole Hazelnuts Chocolatre Bar
Ritter Whole Hazelnuts Chocolate bar.
2. What’s something in your car, beginning with the letter?

Hoses... A few of them are in the engine compartment of my car. They are necessary for keeping an internal combustion engine cool, flowing and running properly.

3. What’s something you miss, beginning with the letter?

Hair at the top of my head. I am not totally bald, but the top has thinned over the years.

4. What’s a character trait you admire but lack, beginning with the letter?

I probably could strive to be more healthy.

5. What’s a regular inconvenience, beginning with the letter?

Hassles - There are plenty of those in our lives, more so today with COVID-19 rules and regulations. It is a hassle to have to wear a mask almost everywhere in public. It is a hassle to have to deal with automated phone menu systems before you can reach a real person. It is a hassle dealing with customer service, especially bad ones. It is a hassle having to pay tax for stupid stuff like the rail every time you buy something in Hawaii. It is a hassle getting through security lines at the airport, and now more so with COVID-19 screening... which has made me a reluctant flyer to the point that I don't intend to go anywhere anytime soon. It is a hassle to have to find a free parking space in this town. It is a hassle paying bills too. Need I go on with this crap? Probably not.

Friday 5 for August 9: Scattergories, Part 9!

This is the annual Friday 5 that involves the Random Letter Generator. Questions are from Scrivener's Friday 5 site.

The letter that I stumbled on was "D".

1. What beverage do you enjoy but seldom have?

Drinking a nice thick chocolate or strawberry milk shake.

Digital cameras have allowed me to take more photos than ever before.
2. What’s better now than when you were a kid?

Digital photography is much better than film photography in relation to cost. While I enjoy the process of film photography, the medium is limiting as to how many images we can shoot per roll of 24 or 36 exposures. This was the only way to take photos from when I was a kid and clear into and beyond college.

In the early 2000's, I adopted digital, slowly but surely. By 2003 I was totally in digital, getting my first DSLR camera that year after plodding along with an older point and shoot digital camera.

Unlike my beloved film cameras, digital allows me to shoot photos almost like a drunken sailor in that you can shoot hundreds of pictures per session as long as you have enough flash memory to store it on.

Today digital is the accepted norm for all photographers. You rarely have to consider purchasing film or related digital media like SD cards, and almost all processing from digital is free vs. the processing and image printing cost for film photography.

Digital has made everyone a photographer including the millions who use their smartphones as their main and often, only camera.

3. Who makes you happy?

While it is not always so, my friend Daniel seems to be a happy guy.

4. Where do you go when you want to indulge?

Long long ago I used to shop at this record store called DJ's Sound City at Ala Moana Shopping Center. I love to look at records and other types of sound recordings. If I find something I like I will dish out a reasonable amount of money to get the recording under consideration.

5. Where’s a comfy place to sit?

On a "delightful" chair or couch if I had access to one. At this time I have no really delightful furniture in my home. Most of the furniture I own are a bit old and mostly utilitarian.

5. If you had to get a tattoo on your upper arm, what’s something whose name begins with the letter that you could live with?

I'm not a tattoo kind of a guy but if I got one showcasing the letter R, I guess it would combine a Rolls Royce with a Rose... then you got a Rose Royce... oh that was a disco group from 1976.

Have a great weekend folks!

Friday 5 for July 17: Scattergories

What random letter was generated by the online random-letter generator? (this doesn’t really count as one of your five questions)

S

1. With what famous person, whose name begins with the letter in question #1, would you most like to be stuck on a desert island?

I wouldn't want to be stuck with anyone on a desert island as the competition for food and resources would be too demanding and we'd end up trying to kill each other.

But for the sake of this exercise, and hoping that the desert island is more like "Gilligan's Island" instead of "Survivor Island", then a famous person I would like to be stuck with in such a place starting with the letter "S" would be Shakira!

You know the latin pop singer from Colombia... Shakira could at least sing and dance for me and help me alleviate hours of boredom awaiting rescue... of course it is Shakira so given enough resources, maybe rescue would not be needed as we could get to know each other better... yeah right.

3. What food item, whose name begins with the letter in question #1, can always be found in your pantry?

Salt and Sugar!

4. What song, whose title begins with the letter in question #1, always makes you feel good?

"Sugar Sugar" by The Archies always made me feel good from when I was a kid.

5. What is your least-favorite film whose title begins with the letter in question #1?

"Star Trek V: The Final Frontier" - if you saw this Star Trek movie you know it is the dog of the bunch. William Shatner should never have been in the director's chair for this cinematic stinker.

6. What unusual animal, whose name begins with the letter in question #1, would be a fun pet?

Siamese Cat - I generally like cats, and well, this one starts with the letter "S" (okay it is not unusual, sorry)!
