Friday 5 for July 10: Troposphere

Friday 5 for July 10: Troposphere

The following questions come from the usual source.

1. What’s your favorite novel, TV series, or film about someone leaving the big city or a big career and returning to their small hometown?

Green Acres. Oliver Douglas and his wife Lisa leave the high life of New York City and take up residence of a dilapidated farmhouse near Hooterville way out in the country to take up farming. Oliver who is a lawyer, is next to hopeless being a farmer even though he is 100% committed to it. Lisa misses her New York life and is a reluctant but coping wife in Hooterville.

The CBS comedy TV series ran from 1965 to 1971.  It was the first thing I thought of when I saw this question as we used to watch it a lot when I was a kid. Today I occasionally watch an episode just for the laughs. Besides Oliver and Lisa, the town of Hooterville is filled with funny, stereotypical country hick characters, some of which crossed over to CBS's two other country comedies: Petticoat Junction and The Beverly Hillbillies. It streams for free on TUBI TV.

2. What’s your favorite novel, TV series, or film about two characters (friends, strangers, coworkers, enemies, or something else) pretending to be in a romantic relationship?

I think I would go with The X Files on this. This one was a slow, slow burn, and Scully and Mulder kind of had something for each other but never admitted it through most of the series. It was in the later movie(s) [2 of them] where something sparked I guess, mainly in the second movie. I haven't seen the 2011 continuation series as it aired on a network I did not want to pay for.

Another show that had a fleeting but mostly professional relationship was the British TV series The Avengers... Mr. Steed and Emma Peel. This incarnation was during the mid run of the hit 1960s TV series.

It is likely I am not totally getting this question as these are the only ones I could think of without breaking my brains!

3. What’s your favorite novel, TV series, or film about someone who stumbles through a hidden portal into a magical or alien world?

Um... off the top of my head... THE WIZARD OF OZ... both the book (Frank Braun) and the movie from when I was a kid. Dorothy and her dog Toto get zapped off to the fantastic land of Oz in a tornado where they meet the Scarecrow, Tin Man and the Cowardly Lion along with the Wicked Witch of the West and the Wizard. In the movie all of the OZ stuff seems to have been a dream. The movie was framed in black and white for the normal scenes and in color for the fantasy story. It was probably quite innovative for its time of release - 1939.

Another one that comes to mind of THE PRISONER. A British agent (Patrick McGoohan) is taken away to an isolated village that he cannot escape from, where everyone's life is reduced to a number. "YOU ARE NUMBER 6." Escape is impossible. It was a British TV series that lasted on one season. It has turned into a cult favorite and streams for free on TUBI TV.

Other movies or TV shows I remember: Genesis II,  Planet Earth, Andromeda (Gene Roddenberry TV movies and series) - the protagonist is astronaut Dylan Hunt who wakes up from a 300 year sleep.

4. What’s your favorite novel, TV series, or film about characters racing against others to get somewhere, find something, or contact someone?

Movies: Indiana Jones - Raiders of the Lost Ark, Indiana Jones & the Temple of Doom, Indiana Jones & The Last Crusade.

Movie: Romancing the Stone - Romance novelist Joan Wilder has to turn over a treasure map or recover a diamond to the bad guys in order to save her kidnapped sister Elaine in Colombia. Action packed adventure comedy: "I broke my heal.." "Now it's practical!" John Colton...

5. What’s your favorite novel, TV series, or film about rivals, enemies, or adversaries becoming lovers, partners, or friends?

See Romancing the Stone above. Joan and John had a very shakey start and were on opposite ends of their respective lifestyles but end up falling for each other... Just like a stupid romance novel. The movie was directed by Robert Zemickis who later gave us the Back to the Future series and Forrest Gump.

There are others but my mind if fried already!!!!

Friday 5 for June 12: Turn the beat around

Friday 5 for June 12: Turn the beat around

Questions come from Scrivener's Friday 5 web blog.

1. What do you do for stress relief?

Eat | Death Scroll on my Android | YouTube on my Mac | Walk

One of the four. Death scroll being the easiest.

2. What do you do to get out of moodiness?

Listen to music or watch mindless YouTube or Facebook videos.

3. How do you get through a day while sleep-deprived?

I force myself to stay up but by late afternoon, if I can, I take a nap.

4. How do you calm down when angry or anxious?

See answers to #1

5. How do you get your focus when you’re having difficulty focusing?

It depends on the task at hand.

Friday 5 for May 8: Someone else’s questions

Haven't done these in almost a year. Just taking a stab at this older one first.

1. If you could go back in time and murder anyone who’s ever lived, who would you choose? You’re not allowed to pick a certain German dictator from the 1940s.

At great risk of altering the timeline continuum, I would consider doing away with Klara Polzi at any time on or before 1888. I would call that a pre-emptive hit. That would prevent the birth of you know who.

2. If you could have any super power, what would you choose — if it has to be something a human can do? For example, you could have super strength (because humans have strength) but you can’t have invisibility or flight (because humans can’t be invisible or fly).

Becoming invisible at will in and out would definitely be my first choice. However since that is not within the realm of this particular question, I would choose to be able to do mental math without the use of a calculating device.

3. What super power do you already have?

Grumbling. I excel at that.

4. Who was your first celebrity crush?

Carly Simon based on that record album I bought by her in 1972 No Secrets. What a great cover and smile -- and good music inside. You're So Vain.

Second one was Susan Dey in the Partridge Family TV show and fake rock group (thanks to The Wrecking Crew studio musicians who were the actual band in addition to the two cast main singers). She became a better actor by the time L.A. Law showed up in the 1980s.

5. Which politicians do you find physically attractive?

Former Alaska Governor and VP candidate Sarah Palin was hot. I think she still is.  Plus she attended school at UH Hilo and HPU for a few semesters long ago.

Friday 5 for October 10: 10/10

It's Sunday the 12th.  Happy Columbus Day!

Sears Playtape "Hipster" 1967

Friday 5 for October 10: 10/10

The questions came from Scriveners Friday 5 site.

1. On a scale from 1 to 10, how was your week?

My weeks are generally a middling 5. Not too good, but not too bad.

2. Which of the Biblical 10 commandments are you especially guilty of breaking this week?*

Commandment #3 is most often violated when I'm frustrated. 😯😮😮

3. What do you remember about being 10 years old (or in 10th grade, if you prefer)?

I was 10 years old in 1967. I remember they made a big deal about the release of The Beatles album Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band on the radio. The song from that record that first impressed me at that time and remains a favorite to this day is Paul McCartney's "Lovely Rita" which painted an image of a London based meter maid I could fall in love with at that time. She sounded intriguing to my 10 year old mind.

I never got to listen to the entire album as a whole until a few years later. Back in the day most of the Top 40 radio stations played various tracks from the album during the course of their broadcast day. So I did get familiar with most of the songs one track at a time.

That Christmas my sister got a tape player called Sears Hipster. It played short 20 minute tape cassettes called Playtape, that failed in the marketplace about 2 years later. Among the tapes she got was a 4 track partial album of Sgt. Pepper. Her favorite Pepper song was "Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite".

Sadly through the ensuing years the tapes were lost, the player fell into disuse and my sister passed away from cancer in 1972. I did find the player some years later (see photo at the top of this entry).

4. Which 10 things do you like most about October?

In no particular order:

-- 31 Days - I like the longer months.

-- Tax Extension Deadline - Better than April.

-- Columbus Day - It is returning as it should be.

-- "The Monster Mash" by Bobby Boris Pickett. Good old Halloween song.

-- There are two comets that should be visible later this month.

-- I bought a refurbished DSLR camera at a good bargain price from Canon this month.

-- I might break out my LP vinyl recording of  the Orson Wells Mercury Theater 1938 radio play of "War of the Worlds" and give it a spin on the hi-fi. All based on the famous HG Wells book.

-- Will likely watch the best version of "War of the Worlds" on video... 1953 version produced by Paramount pictures.

-- Pumpkin Pie.

-- Thriller by Michael Jackson.

5. Who are 10 people you admire, each for a different reason?

-- My Dad - parent #1 taught me how to drive at age 10 and also be safe and thrifty.

-- My Mom - For her kindness and understanding, keeping our family together through some of the bumps in life, and for her great cooking. She was also a good singer.

-- For friends that will remain un-named for this exercise for the things they have taught me and similar values we share. I guess this should bring the number up to and possibly past ten. This also includes my sister and brother.

-- There are people from history, politics, technology, industry and music that I admire but are too numerous or controversial to mention by name.

Friday 5 for October 3: It’s their birthday

Friday 5 for October 3: It’s their birthday

Yay! This is three days late. ðŸ˜€

The questions for the Friday 5 comes from this website.

1. (Eddie Cochran, 1938) What caused your summertime blues this year?

My Canon Powershot G10 camera broke on my second trip to the Big Island of Hawaii... at the airport in Honolulu! I arrived in Hilo and had to buy a less than stellar Kodak digital camera there.

2. (Chubby Checker, 1941) Recently, what caused you to twist yourself?

Can't really think of anything. I try to keep on the straight and narrow. Turning into a pretzel and enduring painful bumps of life is best avoided when at all possible.

3. (Lindsey Buckingham, 1949) This weekend, how will you go your own way?

I'm always going my own way doing whatever it is that I do. Plus I regularly listen to Fleetwood Mac music whenever I can. Rumours is a great record album. Sometimes doing your own thing can make you "Go Insane".

4. (Gwen Stefani, 1969) What part of your personal or professional life these days is B-A-N-A-N-A-S?

Dealing with some of the tech issues involved with helping the non-profit I volunteer for.  Lastest thing is trying to get our domain hosted for free on Gmail. There is a free option, but the thing has lately thrown me into a set-up loop that I can't escape.

5. (Ashlee Simpson, 1984) Which pieces of you are you feeling pretty good about?

I am familiar with the first 4 singers mentioned in these questions. Never paid much attention to the much younger Ashlee Simpson. I guess I am old and well,  old people like myself have all kinds of minor aches and pains which generally does not make me feel "pretty good".

Friday 5 for September 26:
52.6641°N  8.6288°W

Welcome to this week’s Friday 5 Answers. These questions come from the Friday 5 website which this links to.

1. What is your water flask like?

I have several of them, but I hardly use them. I usually drink my water out of a bottle or pitcher poured into a glass or cup.

2. When did you last hold a mic?

This past week I was looking for missing microphones among my collection of electronic stuff. May need them to record some videos later this month. I found a big one that I used to plug into my Radio Shack Mixer, but the 1/4 plugs are too big for the small jack on my camera. I know I have a couple of smaller mics around.

3. Of whom are you jealous?

No one. I am satisfied with who I am.

4. For what are you zealous?

I don't get too enthusiastic about anything. Most things cost way too much money and I tend to avoid them as much as possible. Nope, can't think of anything that excites me enough to be "zealous".

5. And when might you go on a hike?

I've always wanted to do a photowalk up at Lyon Arboretum or on the other side of the island at Hoomaluhia Botanical Garden. Never been to Lyon and the last time I went to Hoomaluhia was way back in the 1980s. At my age challenging hikes are off the table, though I did a few way back in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Gravity can be cruel to hikers.

Friday 5 for September 19: Mononymously yours

Friday 5 for September 19: Mononymously yours

Hello, and welcome to this week’s Friday 5! Please copy these questions to your webspace. Answer the questions there; then leave a comment below so we’ll all know where to check out your responses. Please don’t forget to link us from your website!

1. What’s your favorite Elvis song?

I have a lot favorite Elvis songs, but if I go according to my list of songs for every year since my birth, then my go to Elvis track is "Jailhouse Rock". The songs catches the essence of early rock n roll, and Elvis was at his peak in his early years.

Top 5 Elvis songs (revised September 2025)

  1. Jailhouse Rock
  2. Blue Suede Shoes
  3. I Gotta Know
  4. Ku'uipo
  5. It's Now of Never

2. When did you last wear something Pink?

I'm a guy and I don't wear any Pink. If I did it probably is very long ago and I don't remember it.

3. What’s the most intereSting thing you learned last week?

Charlie Kirk made contingency plans for his succession long before he was brutally shot and killed.  His organization Turning Point USA will continue and his message will spread. News of his death was a total Sting for me. So young. He could have been elected President of the U.S. as early as the mid 2030s.

4. When did you last treat someone awFlea (or when were you last treated awFlea)?

It was a while back, but the people at the UPS store had gawd awful service at the Makaloa Street location. I vow never to go back there ever. Now if I need to deal with UPS I go to the Downtown location.AFLEA.... hmmm...

5. Which notable people do you Cher a name or birthday with?

If I told you this I would have to reveal my birthday which I prefer to keep confidential.  However I will say one of the cast members of the old ABC TV series China Beach has the same birthday as me.

  • ELVIS - Jailhouse Rock
  • PINK - Get The Party Started
  • STING - Fields of Gold
  • FLEA - Give It Away, Give It Away (Red Hot Chili Peppers)
  • CHER - Half Breed

I don't know if we had to figure something out with these words. So I just matched it up with my favorite songs by these people.

Friday 5 for July 25: Scattergories, part 15! - The Letter F

Scattergories Part 15: The Letter F

1. What’s a great summer food?

Definitely NOT FRUITCAKE.... Overall most Fruits, but defying the letter F, most likely for me it is WATERMELON or Banana. I'm not a fan of Figs, and they don't ring "summer" to me. Sorry F.

2. What item not usually bequeathed in a will, would you like to pass along to someone when you die?

Since I haven't died and my parents did not bequeath specific items, I would have to say FURNITURE for this one... and I don't have much... mostly cheap Walmart furniture. I also have a FAN, and maybe if I dug through my closet, perhaps there is a rotting FRUITCAKE... though that is unlikely.

3. What’s an admirable quality in a book but not in a person?

A lot of fiction liberally use the word FUCK in their narratives, but generally it is not a good thing for a person to say. I don't think the word is admirable, but I do notice it a lot. That said a good FINALE to a good story is admirable, while a FINALE in a person's life usually means death.

4. What’s a good food to add to other foods?

FRENCH FRIES go good with hamburgers, sandwiches and cheap Fish and Chips. And then again many varieties of FISH are great. Plus chopped raw FISH goes well with Sushi and other dishes.

5. What could make your day better right now?

FINISHING it off on a good note!

Yep, this one was late... it's Wednesday and I could not pass up Scattergories. Thanks Scrivener.

Friday 5 for July 11: In the can

Friday 5 for July 11: In the can

I don't eat too many cannned foods as I prefer most food fresh. Canned foods come in handy once in a while for convenience or an emergency. That said:

1. What was the most recent meat product you consumed from a can?

Recently this year it was either a can of tuna, sardines or salmon.

2. What was the most recent vegetable product you consumed from a can?

It's been ages ago, but I think it was a can of peas and carrots.

3. What was the most recent fruit product you consumed from a can?

The last time I ate canned fruit was last year. It was a small can of Del Monte Fruit Cocktail. I've also had canned pineapple slices.

4. What was the most recent beverage you consumed from a can?

1 can of LaCroix Orange Sparkling Water at Foodland Farms just the other day with my lunch bento.

5. What are you approaching this week with a can-do attitude?

Nothing. Lately most of the tasks I have to do is either expensive, stressful or both.

As is every week, the questions come from Scrivener's Friday 5 page.

Friday 5 for July 4: 🟩⬛⬛🟨⬛ - What in Hell are These green, black and yellow squares?????

Today We Need to Be Thankful That We Live in the Greatest Country on Earth. God Bless The USA.

The strange topic Friday 5 for July 4. What the hell are these green, black and yellow squares.  The URL doesn't work.

http://f.riday5.com/2025/07/04/friday-5-for-july-4-🟩⬛⬛🟨⬛/ - This is stupid.

1. What connections did you make this week?

After rebooting my Mac I got it to reconnect to the internet again.

2. How would you do in a spelling bee for adults where the other contestants are your average people at the bookstore?

I would probably not do very well, especially if the possibility involves well read people who frequent bookstores. Spellcheck and AI are good friends.

3. When did you most recently keep a cross word to yourself?

Can't remember. A lot of things make me upset.

4. What word’ll best describe your expectations for the coming weekend?

Patriotism.

5. If you could read the strands of your own DNA, what would you most like to know?

I know enough about myself without having to sink to the expensive DNA level to find anything else.

Friday 5 for June 27: You vs You

Generic You vs. You AI image

Friday 5 for June 27: You vs You

These questions are too personal, so I am going to just generalize.

1. How is professional you different from home you?

Professional you have to be on your best behavior, be productive and generally be dressed for a business type environment. At home I am terribly casual and just do things in time as they come.

2. How is grown-up you different from teen you?

The teen me was very long ago. but some of those things that I enjoyed as a teen still appeal to me, like listening to rock music.

3. How is online you different from IRL you?

About the same, though I may be more outspoken online, depending on the place I am posting something. Of course IRL as well as online, everyone has to be very careful and keep your privacy and security in mind.

4. How is morning you different from evening you?

I am more alert and better prepared to do work tasks in the morning vs. in the evening. Night is the time to relax, do more casual things and sleep vs. having to be productive. Sometimes I have to do work related tasks at night.

5. How is drinking you different from sober you?

I don't do any alcoholic beverages at all, so if the drinking me is doing water, well the sober me is also doing water. Both the same, never intoxicated, therefore not prone at all to get a DUI. Yay!

Friday 5 for June 20: What color is your parachute?

Will photographers and models be essential in the future when anyone can just tell AI to create a photo shoot with a virtual model such as this simplified one above?

Friday 5 for June 20: What color is your parachute?

Questions from Scrivner's Friday 5 page.

1. Which job on a film crew would you most like to do, and which would you be best suited for?

I was a producer for our student TV show many moons ago in college. That involved trying to round up a ton of chickens (talent and crew) to be in same place at the same time doing the tasks they signed up for. We had about a dozen people working on this for a short time and it was always a pain to get everyone there at the right time, rent the studio and finish the shoot within a prescribed time. And then there was post production which back in the day was all on 3/4 inch Sony U-Matic tape.. going from master to slave, etc. and cutting it in electronically on this big analog mixing board thing.

Today most of the stuff can be done on computer(s) depending on the size and scope of the production. Surely professional level movies and TV shows take a lot of people to put together... just watch the credits at the end of these... all kinds of specialists employed to get a show produced. Hence the huge budgets to get anything made.

Lisa and I wrote this for Assistance League of Hawaii and I storyboarded it out. We had it produced at Olelo TV in November. Somebody else coordinated the other parts like scheduling time, and bringing in the talent. It took a while to put together and it is only 40 seconds in length.

2. Which job on a hotel staff would you most like to do, and which would you be best suited for?

Probably working in their marketing department producing newsletters, taking photos, maybe updating their website, doing social media photography... who knows. I don't stay in hotels very much but I am sure they do a lot of marketing and media.

3. Which job in a hospital would you most like to do, and which would you be best suited for?

I am probably best suited for dying in the hospital. Got close to that once. That will probably happen again.

4. Which job on a cruise ship would you most like to do, and which would you be best suited for?

Um... probably similar to hotel. I would rather work onshore for their marketing department. Can't stand the thought of being cooped up on a ship, in crew quarters for most of the year. If I had to work on board ship, probably ship photographer, but I would prefer not to.

5. Which job on a fashion magazine would you most like to do, and which would you be best suited for?

I don't have any fashion industry experience, but then again being a fashion photographer may be nice but very demanding. Models can be difficult to work with. I'd probably be better suited for working as a production artist on a computer doing the graphics, page make-up. etc... though I have been out of mainstream print media for quite some time now. A lot of the Mac programs have changed over the last 20 years, much of it not good... especially Adobe products with their horribly expensive subscription model. I used to work in advertising many years ago. A lot of jobs above may be replaced by AI.

Friday 5 for May 30: Agitation

Friday 5 for May 30: Agitation

1. Whose performance of your nation’s anthem did you find especially stirring?

It always feels great and patriotic when any of the military or even college bands play "The Star Spangled Banner" without any vocal accompaniment. Just a huge instrumental piece of music, the larger the band, the better.

2. When did you last fold something?

Two weeks ago after I took my laundry out of the dryer. Gotta do that again this weekend. Fold towels, pants, shirts, sheets, etc. I also occasionally fold paper.

3. When did you last toss something to someone?

Probably last week when I tossed something to Lisa.

4. How do you feel about beets?

I HATE BEETS!!!!!!!

5. What do you have mixed feelings about?

The political and economic direction the state of Hawaii is going in. I mostly have negative feelings about that. Our stupid governor just raised taxes on tourists. All tax increase have far reaching tentacles beyond the core group the tax is attacking.

Questions come from the Friday 5 blog.

Friday 5 for May 23: Zihuatanejo

Hello, and welcome to this week’s Friday 5! Please copy these questions to your webspace. Answer the questions there; then leave a comment below so we’ll all know where to check out your responses. Please don’t forget to link us from your website!

OK what a strange word for the topic title. "Zihuatanejo" not found in the usual dictionary and Wikipedia points to a place in Mexico. Nope not going near Mexico anytime in my life. It's a dangerous country.

1. What could use a good shining?

Simple: My car!

2. When have you recently had to stand in a slow-moving line?

It's a good thing I rarely ever go to rock concerts or any kind of live show. Way, way back I remember standing in a long line just to buy tickets at the Blaisdell Center to go see The Rolling Stones at the now condemned Aloha Stadium back in 1998. I also remember standing in long lines to go see most of the Star Wars movies.

Today I won't go to any concerts because in addition to the regular state of Hawaii taxes, I certainly don't want to pay for the Ticketmaster taxes either. What do people get out of Ticketmaster? The whole damn thing is a scam.

A few years ago I had to wait in a line at Satellite City Hall to register the car. Missed the mail in deadline.

3. What was your favorite childhood counting-out game to determine who was it?

I vaguely recall a game called "Duck Duck Goose"... while it was not a counting game I think after you got called "goose" you had to chase the kid who did the "duck duck goose" countdown thing. I'm kind of blurred on this, since it has been decades since I was a kid.

4. Is anything feeling thinner these days?

  • My wallet
  • Not me

5. What do you know about Maine?

My friend Lisa is from Maine and she tells me it is one of those states that have an extremely high percentage of white people and not much ethnic diversity.

An interesting thing I know about Maine is that the former Hawaii Superferry now known as The Cat sails between Maine and Nova Scotia, Canada during the summer season.

The Superferry looks the same as it did when I rode it in 2007 from Oahu to Maui and back.

Friday 5 for May 16: This was the week that was, in 1969

Haven't done one of these in awhile... so here goes... May 21. Ha! 1969 was a good year. Man landed on the moon. The Beatles were still a band, but only hangining on. They came out with at least two #1 hits that year. The Rolling Stones had a huge #1 hit. - "Honky Tonk Woman".... and Zager and Evans had their only #1 hit ever... "In the Year 2525".

1. How do you feel about bowling? (May 9: Billy Hardwick wins the Bowling Proprietors’ Association of America all-star bowling tournament)

I don't bowl, and generally don't do sports because I suck at them all.

2. How do you feel about the comedy of Monty Python, and do you have a favorite bit? (May 11: Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones, and Michael Palin form Monty Python)

Not a fan of Monty Python, though I think I saw one of two movies... they were mostly terrible. Not a big fan of comedy movies in general.

3. How many Cate Blanchett films have you seen, and do you have a favorite? (May 14: Cate Blanchett is born)

I saw four of them, of which three were The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Never got around to seeing The Hobbit trilogy. The other movie of hers that I saw was Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull. As a group, the Rings trilogy was great.

4. What would you like to get back? (May 14: “Get Back” by the Beatles is the number one song in America).

One of the lines in the song is "Get Back to where you once belonged..."

Someday I need to move back to the Big Island... before I die.

5. Who’s your favorite Joni, and who’s your favorite Mitchell? Alternate spellings and forms of the name are allowed! (May 17: Joni Mitchell is on the cover of Rolling Stone #33)

I can't think of any Joni's except for Joni Mitchell... and she is NOT my favorite singer by miles. So that said, in terms of Joni's....NONE.

Mitchell? Hmmm. Don't know any except for you here on the blog and elsewhere online.

So pretty much a strike out on this question.

Friday 5 for January 17: This week in the news

Friday 5 for January 17: This week in the news

The following questions come from the Friday 5 blog.

1. Has the death of a famous person (not connected to you personally) ever made you cry?

Anyone famous is far removed from me, so the answer to this is "NO".

2. Have you ever sent money as relief aid after a disaster?

I sent $40 many years ago as disaster aid after Hurricane Iniki in 1992.

3. How will the recent declaration affirming alcoholic beverages as cancer-causing affect your consumption?

It won't. I don't drink alcoholic beverages at all. Never did. Never will.

4. What is the most bizarre (or difficult to understand) movie you’ve seen?

For the longest time it was 2001: A Space Odyssey until I read the book.

5. How willing and able are you to separate art from artist when a musican, actor, writer, or other creator is discovered to have behaved very badly?

Yep. I am able to separate the recordings the artist made from the bad behavior that they display in the public record. This would include The Rolling Stones, The Who, Rod Stewart and many other music artists who have trashed people, hotel rooms or worst, taken drugs. Many such as Jim Morrison, Keith Moon, Janis Joplin and others have died from drug abuse. All bad behaviors, but none of it has prevented me from enjoying the musical recordings they produced.

Friday 5 for January 10: On (a different) deck

Friday 5 for January 10: On (a different) deck

Let's see if I can do a better job answering these in 2025.

1. If everyone carried personal cards (instead of business cards), what would you put on the line just beneath your name, where job titles usually go?

Don't Spam Me.

2. What’s your favorite card game?

I'm not a card player. The one card game I play the most is Classic Solitaire, the kind that you find on almost every computer based platform. See graphic above.

3. How confidently and competently do you shuffle a deck of cards?

I don't drop them, unless it is 52 card pick-up.

4. To whom did you last send a non-holiday, non-birthday greeting card?

Sympathy card to the family of a friend that died a few years back.

5. When did you last jot something down on an index card?

It was less than a year ago, but I can't find the card and I don't remember what I wrote. I do have a small pack of blank 3 x 5 cards.

Questions from the usual source.

Friday 5 for January 3: On deck

1. What book are you going to read next?

For Love of Country: Leave the Democrat Party Behind by Tulsi Gabbard. Bet you this one ruffles some feathers. 😀

2. What movie will you most likely see next?

I have a ton of movies saved to my to view lists at TUBI TV and Amazon Prime Video. Can't decide which one next, though Oppenheimer is on my most wanted to watch list for now.

3. What are you doing the day after tomorrow?

Since I am answering this on a Saturday, the day after tomorrow is Monday, so the thing I will be doing is going to work. 😀

4. This is going to be a great year, but what are you looking forward to next year?

Getting older and another step closer to my grave, if it doesn't happen this year.

5. What are you looking forward to opening once you’ve used up the current product?

Another SD memory card. Yippee.

Friday 5 for November 22: And the world laughs with you

Friday 5 for November 22: And the world laughs with you

The following questions come from the weekly Friday 5 blog.

1. Among people who are professionally funny, who most reliably makes you laugh?

For my entire life since I was a kid, The Three Stooges have provided me years of laughs with their slapstick comedy shorts. I still laugh at them today.

2. Which films have made you laugh most?

One of them is Splash with Tom Hanks, Darryl Hannah, John Candy and Eugene Levy. To me Levy stole the show with his Dr. Walter Kornbluth character... "Behold the Mermaid!"

I get more laughs out of funny TV shows, especially older ones.

Various episodes of the TV series Seinfeld. "The Parking Space" episode is one of my favorites of all time, followed by the one with The Soup Nazi.

Other comedy TV shows that I like include:

- The Addams Family

- Gilligan's Island

- Green Acres

- The Beverly Hillbillies

- Beavis & Butthead

- The Simpsons

- South Park

3. Whose comedy leaves you flat?

Most modern comics who I can't recall their names, I find lame or offensive.

4. When did you most recently laugh aloud at something you read?

The breakdown of electoral college votes for the recently completed presidential election the day after... 270+ votes ending up with 312 for Trump. MAGA!

It was funny to read about all the goofy crybaby reactions from the liberal left losers. The videos were even more funny.

5. What are some of your favorite novelty songs?

Not in any order:

- The Three Stooges - Swingin' the Alphabet

- Jump in the Saddle Band - The Curly Shuffle

- Ogden & Edsel - Dead Puppies

- Barnes & Barnes - Fishheads

- Chuck Berry - My Ding A Ling

- Ray Stevens - The Streak; Ahab The Arab

- Napoleon the XIV - They're Coming To Take Me Away

- Elmo & Patsy - Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer

- Fred Schneider & the Superions - Fruitcake

- J. Geils Band - No Anchovies Please

- Maestro Ziikos - APT Donald Trump (new)

There are plenty others.

Friday 5 for October 25: I’ve got a bad feeling about this

Friday 5 for October 25: I’ve got a bad feeling about this

The following questions come from Scrivener's Friday 5 blog:

1. In your city, where might a visitor find a wretched hive of scum and villainy?

Hawaii State Capitol. 😀 Some of them should be at OCCC.

2. When did you most recently do something you didn’t think you could do?

Survive a heart attack in 2015.

3. If a robot could do all but two of your regular menial chores, which two would you continue to do?

  • Turn the lights on and off
  • Cook most of my meals

4. Who best qualifies as a mentor in your life today?

The two people who mentored me have both died now.

5. How are you at chess?

I'm better at checkers and Stratego. Chess, I can play but my King would probably be checkmated in under five minutes.

I have a cautious good feeling that Trump will win.

Friday 5 for October 11: CRIB

Friday 5 for October 11: CRIB

As usual the questions come from Scrivener's Friday 5 page. I am doing this one for October 11 instead of the current one for October 18.

Here are the questions and answers:

1. When did you last have fresh cut flowers in your home?

September 18, 2024. See photo above.

2. When did you last have a guest not related to you in your home?

Today, yesterday, last week, this month, last month, the past five years. Lisa is not related to me but she is a long-term guest here.

3. When did you last have a service or delivery person in your home?

I think that was on July 13. EMS.  😮 😧

4. When did you last have nobody at all (including you) overnight in your home?

May 2019. Went to a family reunion on the Big Island of Hawaii.

5. When did you last have an unexpected visitor at your front door?

Building management stopped by the yell at us about our windows being opened during window washing day last month. They were loud and rude. I had forgotten about that day as I was out running an errand that morning. I usually never forget about those days.
