Friday 5 for February 23: Noms

Questions from Scrivener's Friday 5 blog.

1. What’s the strangest food you’ve eaten out of a can?

The usual canned foods I eat are tuna and sardines. Once in a blue moon spam or corned beef. I can't think of anything strange. When it comes to food I tend to go with what is familiar. I am not adventureous.

2. What food most recently made you ill?

I can't think of anything recent. As for something years ago, the only thing I remember are the runs as if my stomach was being pumped. Mamacita's pasta... lovely... gross.

It was most likely spaghetti years ago from Mamacita (I think that is the name) of the Ala Moana Center Food Court complex, which recently closed... for good... After getting sick from their awful food, I never went there again.

3. What movie makes you really want to eat?

Here at home anything that is longer than a half hour on streaming will get me to go back and forth to the fridge or pantry. Most recently it was the movie Tetris on Apple TV before my free subscription ran out. It's a good movie about the development and marketing of the popular computer game Tetris. Developed in the old Soviet Union, sold and pirated on PCs and how it got to the Nintendo Game Boy during the transition of the old Soviet Union into the "new" Russia. Good movie.

4. What haven’t you eaten in a really, really long time?

My Mom's Thanksgiving stuffing and macaroni potato salad. It is something I will never ever eat again considering Mom passed away in 2015 and stopped cooking about two years before that. I miss Mom.

5. What did you most recently eat in a moving vehicle?

My commute to anywhere is generally short, so I can't remember what I recently ate. In the past I've eaten burgers and fries after ordering them through the drive-thru.

Friday 5 for September 15: Happy Hour

I recently ate at Chic-fil-A for the first and only time so far. It was okay but nothing spectacular.

Happy Hour? Not.

I had all of my answers saved to Google Docs on Friday but forgot to post them here until today... Sunday. Questions come from their usual source.

1. During which specific hour of the day are you likeliest to be happy?

It depends on the circumstance and where I am during the day.

2. Which food-beverage pairings do you feel strongest about?

The standard burger - bun, beef, chicken or fish - should have tomato, lettuce and onion and one sauce at their most basic level.

The burger can be matched with water (my preference) or a soft drink of some type.

Optional - French fries or macaroni potato salad.

Optional 2 would be cheese, cucumbers, additional spices, avacado.

3. Do you enjoy (or have you enjoyed) socializing with coworkers?

It depends on where I have worked. Office parties are an unwanted social chore for me…. As are most "business" lunches with the entire group. I'm not a big fan of group gatherings.

One on one (or two) with a trusted colleague is more to my preference if one must socialize. Generally I rather go home.

4. When did you last try something different (alcoholic or non-alcoholic) to drink?

I haven't tried anything new in the drink department for a long time. I don't do any alcoholic drinks, and have sworn off sugared drinks since 2011. I mostly drink just plain old water.

5. What’s your favorite way to unwind after a long day of doing whatever you do during the day?

Listen to recorded music on one of my many owned playback devices. Records, CDs, tapes or digital files / streams. If I feel motivated, i also like to take photo walks with one of my many cameras.

Friday 5 for March 5: Just Vegging

Moms everywhere always told us to "eat your vegetables." When I was a kid I did not care much for veggies. Over time they have become a major part of my diet. Vegetables are good for us, especially green leafy ones. This week's Friday 5 is all about vegging... let's go.

1. What’s your favorite root vegetable, and what’s your favorite way to eat it?

Root veggie? Hmm... I'm not sure if these are root bound, but my top 5 would be...

1. Onions - with just about everything, fried, raw, microwaved, whatever.
2. Potatoes - mashed, baked... and while not healthy, french fried,
tater tots, etc.
3. Carrots - raw or with beef stew, steamed. I just hate peeling them.

Whoops... I can only think of those three. Are onions root bound? Never saw an onion plant. They just show up in the store.

2. What’s your favorite leafy green, and what’s your favorite way to eat it?

My Top 5:

1. Broccoli - Love it. Steamed by themselves or stir fried with chicken, beef.
2. Manoa Lettuce - expensive but good with sandwich, salad
3. Lettuce (in general) - same as above, good with hamburgers, fish-burgers
4. Cabbage - often used as filler, with diced spam or corned beef and fried.
5. Kale - Good with salads, sandwich, Amy's Kale Bowl

3. What’s your favorite legume, and what’s your favorite way to eat it?

I had to look up "legume"... heh. Another top 5.

1. Peanuts - Boiled peanuts, local style... yum.
2. Soybeans - As edamame - yum.
3. Peas - with carrots, in salads, by themselves, explode in my mouth.
4. Beans - with chili and rice.; other varieties with whatever.
5. Lentil - Lentil soup, Amy's brand.

4. What’s your favorite vegetable to put on a pizza?

Foodland Farms makes a great vegetarian pizza... I think they now have two varieties. Very good. I love black olives but Lisa does not. Oh well, everything else is good. Bell peppers on pizza would be my second favorite... followed by mushrooms. Are mushrooms a vegetable? Or is it just fungi????

Also love plenty of onions on my pizza.

5. What’s your favorite fruit to eat in a green salad?

OK. I have to go with TOMATOES. I consider them a vegetable but others say it is a FRUIT... so for all its fruity goodness, I go with tomatoes. Love em.

Somewhere along the line I forgot broccoli. Love them too... Steamed broccoli by itself is good or prepared mixed with other veggies, stir fried chicken. Yum. Is broccoli a leafy green? I guess it would be...

Onward now to veg out on YouTube videos.. heh. Can't eat em but they're entertaining.

Friday 5 for November 1: Food Mood

From the Friday 5 blog... comes another topic on food.*

1. What’s the best striped food?
From when I was a kid, I always liked
these striped cookies from Keebler.

2. What’s the best spotted food?

I don't  know  about spotted food. I associate that with age... like bread that is growing green mold spots... cheese with mold growing on it. Because this comes to mind, I don't think I want spotted food.

Spotted food? Really???

3. What’s the best layered food?

  • Any multi layered cake with chocolate frosting between each layer will do fine.
  • I guess the second layered food I like is lasanga.

4. What’s the best swirly food?

We're back to junk dessert food for this which is so good... cinnamon roll is good or the strawberry one. Mmmm... sugar and too much for me. Look at all the junk food so far in this post... we got like really crappy food (moldy bread) to really sweet but not totally good for you food and we haven't even made it to #5.

5. What’s the best black-and-white food?

And drumroll please, back to my childhood... OREO COOKIES! Yep, the ultimate, black and white food... Just don't eat too much all at once... because what goes in black and white comes out all...... black! Muahahahahahaha!

I hope my doctor doesn't read this... heh... Most of these foods I should not eat... especially #2.... and too much of #5 because you would not like the color of your #2. That's it for my sugar and cholesterol fix for today.

This was fun compared to the last Friday 5 I answered.

Friday 5 for June 28: Dress You Up in My Love

1. For the rest of your life, you get to dispense one condiment out of each fingertip of your right hand, defining “condiment” liberally. Which five do you commit to?

  • Sugar
  • Cinnamon
  • Chocolate
  • Pepper
  • Oregno
2. What is the best way to spiffy-up french fries?

Generally I take my fries plain... very lightly salted if possible, but if I do "spiffy up" basic ketchup is good. Maybe tarter sauce (as shown above) or sweet and sour sauce.

3. The restaurant is out of your favorite salad dressing. What do you order instead?

I can eat salads plain. Have no problem with it.

4. How do you like to modify your favorite heat-and-eat food?

I usually sprinkle pepper on it.

5. In what way do you play with your food?

If taking photos of food is playing, then that pretty much is the extent of it. Mother always said it is not nice to play with your food.

Questions from Scrivener's Friday 5.

Of course when I first saw the topic title, I thought about this song:

Friday 5 for March 9: Aroma

Lunch Today
Mom's mac salad with a hamburger.

"Hello, and welcome to this week’s Friday 5!  Please copy these questions to your webspace.  Answer the questions there; then leave a comment below so we’ll all know where to check out your responses.  Please don’t forget to link us from your website!"

1. What’s something you enjoy that contains garlic?

Stir fry chicken, fish or beef mixed with veggies and a good dose of garlic and onions. Garlic is good but I like onions better.

2. What’s something you enjoy that contains ginger?

Um…. shoyu chicken and beef teriyaki spiced up soy sauce and ginger… foods that I no longer eat since they are high in salt, sugar and fat.

3. What’s something you enjoy that contains cloves?

I have a bottle of that stuff that I use to sprinkle on things I make like stir fry or salads.

4. What’s something you enjoy that contains cinnamon?

Saloon Pilot Cracker Toast

Cinnamon toast and Cinnamon cracker-toast with butter. French toast with cinnamon is good too. Shown above is "cracker-toast". You can view my simple recipe at this link: Uncle Mel's Cracker Toast Page

5. What’s something you enjoy that contains celery?

Celery sticks and Mom’s potato macaroni salad. We used to chop up celery, onions, carrots, and black olives into the thing, mix it with hard boiled eggs (after shell removal of course), boiled potatos, macaroni and Best Foods brand mayonaise seasoned with salt and pepper. We had this every Thanksgiving and some Christmas holidays as an important side dish. Miss it. Fortunately the recipe still lives and my brother can make it almost exactly as Mom.

Friday 5 for October 13: Dear Old Golden Rule Days

1. When did you last raise your hand to be called upon, to get someones attention, or in response to a how many of you question? Or heck, for any reason at all?

Last Friday, October 6. We had a building meeting to address issues with the pipe re-construction project. Raised my hand several times to ask questions.

2. When did you last have to do anything akin to homework?

Currently looking into how to use Constant Contact email software. Also trying to figure out Live POS computer system closing details.

3. When did you and your friends last go outside to play?

I occasionally go on walks with my friend Lisa.

4. How’s your penmanship nowadays?

It is basically good. What do you think?

5. Among stuff you periodically eat, what reminds you most of your lunches in the school cafeteria?

Curry hamburger stew and rice (haven't eaten this in a long time since it has a high salt content). This is the only dish other than certain types of pizza and hamburger sandwiches that may come to mind in comparison to what we had for school lunch back in the day. I also don't eat these foods on a regular basis due to high salt and fat content. Gotta keep that blood pressure in check! :D

Friday 5 for July 7: Grabby

Questions from Scivener's weekly Friday 5 blog.

1. There’s a convenience store nearby and you have a small case of the munchies. What do you grab?

Lately a granola bar like the one pictured above.

2. You’re about to get on a plane and someone just stole all your reading material, but there’s a newsstand nearby. What magazine (of likely available titles) do you grab?

Who buys magazines these days? They cost at least $5 a pop not the $2 of years gone by. The internet has free stuff you can read, but of course the damn thing don't work on many flights. Of course you can always download a book or PDF file of some sort to read on your device. Or maybe even listen to a podcast. Plenty of stuff to keep you entertained and informed while on a plane.

3. On a regular work day, where do you grab lunch and what do you get if you don’t bring a lunch from home?

I don't have much time for lunch, so the granola bar (above) is a substitute.

4. Instead of a lunch, you decide you need a quick nap during your workday. Where can you grab 40 winks?

We'd be fired if we slept on the job. :O

5. How close to your head is your cell phone when you’re asleep in bed?

Today's smart phones are pretty much internet access devices and digital cameras more than they are a phone, so yeah, they are close by so you can get news, information or entertainment. Mine is on the night table connected to a long charging cable.

Unboxing Samsung Galaxy J7

I purposely leave the damn thing at home when I don't want to be bothered. For emergency use I do carry around an out of commission Alcatel phone that can still do emergency 911 calls.

Friday 5 for October 7: Bacon

1. When did you most recently have bacon, and what did you have with it?

Sometime last year was the last I had bacon. After my surgery I was told to keep away from greasy, fatty, oily foods. I must have had my last bacon with a breakfast food such as eggs and waffles.

2. How do you like your bacon?

Chopped up and mixed with fried rice.

3. Where do you rate bacon among the standard breakfast meats?

Formerly essential, but sadly not anymore since I should not eat it.

4. What's something unusual you've had with bacon as an ingredient?  How was it?

Perhaps in a turkey sandwich? That is not very unusual.

5. Whats a better aroma to wake up to than bacon?

Bacon has a nice smell. Better than tofu. I'm not a tofu fan. Too mooshy.

Friday 5 for September 21 - Where to Go

Scrivener's Friday 5 for September 21 - Where To Go?

McDonald's Coffee
1. Where do you go for a great cup of coffee or tea?

I don't do coffee nor tea, but places that sell these items usually have good breakfast food or at least convenient food. I tend to go to McDonalds' with my coffee drinking buddy because we not only like the low prices for food and beverage there, but they also have free wifi!

Chocolate Goodness

2. Where do you go for a great doughnut?

Most doughnuts are great and location does not matter all that much. One thing I have noticed is a spike in prices for your usual doughnuts....  glazed, sugar or chocolate... not good, which could also be good since I should not eat doughnuts with any regularity. For really sweet doughnuts there is Krispy Kreme which I understand is only on the island of Maui. That said I also consider Malasadas as a form of doughnut and the best place to get them is Leonards' Bakery on Oahu or Tex Drive In on the Big Island of Hawaii.

Lunch Today

3. Where do you go for a great sandwich?

I have found that Hau Tree Lanai (crab cake sandwich plate shown) in Waikiki have good sandwiches if you want to pay the price not only for the sandwich but also for the beachfront "ambience".... otherwise I mostly settle for a Subway build to order sandwich.

4. Where do you go for a great bowl of soup?

Not much of a soup conneissour, but when I want some I make it from canned or soup mix I get from the supermarket.

Smile Burger

5. Where do you go for a great post-midnight snack?

What's open past midnight in Honolulu? Plenty... LikeLike Drive In or Zippy's are open if you want your snack to be a meal... otherwise the old stand-by's such as McDonald's, 7-Eleven, Don Quijote, Safeway and WalMart will do fine. Photo above: Hamburger patty from LikeLike Drive In. That is good with their fried rice side order plate. Mmmmm.

Friday 5 for December 9: Toppings

From Scrivener's Friday 5: When in doubt: go to food.

Hot Fudge Sundae @ Rick's Dessert Diner

1. What’s your favorite ice cream topping?

Chocolate hot fudge... any type of chocolate hot fudge sundae is good.

2. What’s your favorite pizza topping?

Supreme - pepperoni, olives, bell peppers, onions, hamburger beef, cheese

3. What’s your favorite thing to sprinkle cocoa powder on?

Probably mix it up in ice cream or make a chocolate milk shake. Isn't this kind of like Nestles' Quick or Ovaltene? Hot chocolate is nice.

4. What’s your favorite thing to put whipped cream on?

Um... Chocolate hot fudge sundae (see top photo) or any kind of marangue or pumpkin pie... or maybe.... like her... below...

5. What do you like to put upon a cracker?

Saloon Pilot Cracker Toast

Toasted with butter and cinnamon.

Friday 5 for June 25: Breakfast

Pancake
I like pancakes and waffles for breakfast.

1. Oh my goodness! You have to run out the door right now and you haven’t eaten! Before dashing out, what do you grab to wolf down on your way?

Often I simply don't eat but grab a snack later at the store.

2. What’s a popular breakfast you dislike?

Easy over eggs. I don't like any eggs that seem to be raw. Scrambled eggs are just fine.

I also dislike raisin bran cereals - all types.

3. You’re going out for breakfast anywhere you want, and someone else is treating! Where do you go and what do you order?

No place in particular except maybe at my Mom's house. Air fare anyone?

4. What do you have when you need a simple, healthy (or healthy-ish, for those of you who just don’t do healthy!) breakfast?

Diamond Saloon Pilot Crackers with peanut butter. The old Hilo Saloon Pilot Crackers were better.

Check out my recipe for "Cracker Toast"

5. You’ve been invited to a breakfast potluck. What are you most likely to bring?

I try to avoid 99% of most potlucks.

I'm surprised there is no favorite breakfast food question. My favorite breakfast foods are waffles with butter & syrup, hot whipped chocolate or pancakes with bacon and scrambled eggs.

Friday 5 for March 5 - Staples

Fried Rice @ Kuhio Grill

1. Of all the hundreds of sizes and shapes bread seems to come in, what is your favorite?

Whatever is affordable and tastes good.

2. What’s your favorite thing to eat with rice?

Any plate lunch or dinner type of foods - chicken, beef, fish, etc. Fried rice is a favorite.

3. What are your feelings about milk?

I like it with cereal, but I don't like it if the cereal gets too soggy. Best to eat milked cereal quickly.

4. What was wrapped in the tortilla you most recently ate?

Probably beef and beans, maybe cheese. Been a while since I had one.

5. How many staplers are there in your house and where are they?

I have 2 staplers in my house and right now I don't know where either of them are.

Photo above: Fried rice is one of my favorite rice dishes.

"Fried Day" for February 5

What's For Lunch?

OK. So this is Saturday. I'm a day late and several dollars short, but who's counting or even cares? Missed last week, but now I am back. Bring on the questions.

1. When you come home from a long day of whatever it is you do and your brain is totally fried, what therapy do you normally seek?

Sleep!

2. Of the myriad of desserts made primarily of fried dough, what is your favorite?

Malasadas.

3. Most fried foods are best right out of the fryer, but what’s a fried food that you enjoy cold?

Fried chicken is okay when it is cold.

4. What's the most unusual deep-fried food you've ever tried?

Can't think of any.

5. Where can you get really good French fries?

McDonalds - consistent across most of all of their locations. I'm sure there are better fries elsewhere, but McDonalds comes to mind when I think about good french fry quality all around.

Friday 5 for July 10: Holes

1. Where can you go for a really good bagel, and how do you like yours?

I'm not a big fan of bagels, so I don't have any particular place to get one. If I do eat a bagel, I generally like them plain or with a light coating of butter.

2. What is your favorite style of doughnut?

Sugar glazed or chocolate glazed.

3. What’s your favorite flavor of Lifesavers?

I like the cherry ones best. I don't know if Lifesavers still sells the pack with only the red ones.

4. What O-shaped breakfast cereals do you like?

Cheeri-O's or Apple Jacks.

5. How do you feel about onion rings, and where can you get some good ones?

I like onion rings. Don't have any particular place to get good ones... I usually get em at Burger King but I would suspect there are other places that have better ones.

5. How far are you from the nearest cow?

Eat & Drink

I guess everyone who eats has an opinion on what and how we eat. Here's my responses to today's Friday 5 "Eat & Drink" questions.

1. What’s something you will not eat unless you also have ketchup?

I usually like to have ketchup with Meat Loaf.

2. What’s something you will not drink unless it is served on ice cubes?

I like cold drinks but I do not require ice cubes all of the time. Ice cubes are nice when they are available, especially if you can control how many cubes you put in your drink. I do soft drinks only. No alcohol for me.

That all said, I hate when you go to a food place and the cup is filled mostly with ice cubes and not too much soda. Eating places make a lot of money selling soda with mostly ice cubes in them.

3. What’s something you will not eat unless it is served between slices of bread?

Generally peanut butter, but then if I have crackers, I like peanut butter with that too. Lately I haven’t done peanut butter because of recent salmonella poisoning news.

4. What’s something you will not drink unless you have a straw?

Icee! I like the red straw with the scooper at the end. Strawberry icee is my favorite.

5. What’s something else you will not eat except under very specific circumstances?

Beets - unless it is the last food on earth that is available.
